Ecosystems, nutrition, and community health are becoming more interdependent, with vulnerable rural populations being disproportionately impacted by complex environmental, socioeconomic and biological pathways. This study brings together the latest evidence to explore the impact of climate change on agricultural production, food systems, nutrition security, water resources and physical and mental health and considers the multi-dimensionality of rural vulnerability. The study critically analyses the effects of climate variability, extreme weather events, ecosystem degradation and socioeconomic inequalities on food availability, dietary diversity, disease burden and access to health care services. It also reviews the potential for resilience-building measures such as climate-smart agriculture, nutrition-sensitive measures, resilient health-care systems, sustainable water and sanitation management, ecosystem conservation, community engagement and inclusive governance. The study suggests a climate-nutrition-health resilience framework for enhancing the resilience of households and communities, based on recent advances in resilience science, which encompasses the intersection of environmental sustainability, food security, healthcare preparedness, institutional coordination, and local knowledge. The framework focuses on quantifiable measures of resilience to help guide evidence-based planning, policy integration, and ongoing tracking of rural outcomes. The study also pinpoints significant implementation issues due to financial constraints, institutional capacity, technological gaps and social inequities, and proposes priorities for future interdisciplinary research. Overall, the study provides a solid conceptual basis for policymakers, researchers, and development practitioners to increase the resilience of rural communities in the face of growing climate uncertainty, based on coordinated multisectoral approaches that integrate climate adaptation, nutrition, community health and environmental stewardship.
