Traditional Medicinal-Plant Knowledge and Laboratory Validation Connecting Ethnobotany, Pharmacology and Community Healthcare

Traditional medicinal-plant knowledge continues to support primary healthcare, cultural identity, and therapeutic discovery, particularly in rural and underserved communities. This study synthesizes evidence linking ethnobotanical documentation with phytochemical analysis, pharmacological validation, safety assessment, quality standardisation, and community healthcare integration. Ethnobotanical approaches, including interviews, field walks, market surveys, voucher-specimen preparation, and quantitative indices, provide a systematic basis for identifying culturally important and therapeutically promising plant species. Laboratory validation then establishes plant identity, chemical composition, biological activity, mechanisms of action, toxicity, pharmacokinetics, and dose-response relationships through in-vitro, in-vivo, computational, and clinical methods. Emerging tools such as metabolomics, molecular docking, natural-product databases, network pharmacology, and artificial intelligence accelerate compound prioritisation and clarify multi-component, multi-target effects. However, adulteration, contamination, species misidentification, inconsistent extraction, poor bioavailability, herb-drug interactions, and insufficient clinical evidence continue to restrict safe implementation. Effective integration into community healthcare requires standardised formulations, professional supervision, pharmacovigilance, community education, sustainable harvesting, and collaboration among traditional healers, botanists, pharmacologists, pharmacists, clinicians, conservationists, and public-health specialists. The study also highlights methodological limitations and future priorities involving standardised protocols, clinical trials, multidisciplinary research, conservation, and personalised herbal medicine. Overall, connecting traditional knowledge with rigorous laboratory and clinical evidence expands accessible treatment options, strengthens patient safety, preserves medicinal biodiversity, and supports culturally appropriate, evidence-based healthcare.
